Check printing for contractors who pay suppliers with a paper check

Suppliers and subs still ask for a check, especially when a card fee or a new vendor setup is slower than paper. OwnChecks prints that check on a Windows PC in the shop or the truck’s office, with the job name in the memo. It is not job-costing software and it does not produce lien waivers.

The shop printer, not a job-cost system

A contractor’s check run is usually the lumber yard, the equipment rental, a sub’s draw, or a dumpster invoice. The useful details are the payee and a memo that names the job or the invoice. OwnChecks stores the payee, prints the check with your logo if you added one, and keeps the row in a register you can search later when someone asks which check covered which job.

It stops there. It does not know the estimate, the change orders, or what is left in the budget. It does not print a lien waiver, a pay application, or a 1099. Those stay in whatever system already handles them. The CSV export is how a bookkeeper gets the check list without retyping it from the stubs.

Add the operating account you are authorized to sign. If retainage or payroll lives in a different account, add that account too and choose it on purpose. Printing a supplier check on the payroll account is a bookkeeping mess the software will happily create if you let it.

Stock in the truck or stock in the office

Blank stock plus a laser printer in the office is the setup this app expects. MICR toner is recommended if you print the MICR line. Pre-printed stock works if you would rather not. A portable printer in a truck is your experiment to run with a VOID test page, not something this site promises. Print a free test page to check alignment. Confirm acceptance with your bank before you rely on a check. A test page does not prove bank acceptance. OwnChecks is not affiliated with any bank, and it does not move money.

Your checks, payees and register stay on your PC. Nothing is uploaded. The license is $50 for the first Windows computer. The office PC and a laptop are two computers: add the laptop for $15. They do not share a live register. Download a backup after a check run so a stolen laptop is not the only copy of who you paid.

Questions

Can the memo show the job name?

Yes. The memo is free text. The register can be searched by that memo and exported to CSV. It does not roll costs up by job.

Does this print lien waivers or pay apps?

No. It prints checks and keeps a register of those checks. Waivers and applications for payment are separate documents.

Can I print in the truck?

Only if that computer is a Windows PC with a printer and its own license. A second computer is $15 once. There is no phone app.
